There’s no “I” in Teamwork! Teamwork makes the dream work! We have all heard these expressions that are intended to be inspiring and motivate us toward increased collaboration and a winning sense of togetherness. Teamwork is truly wonderful, but it’s also really hard. A true “super team” cannot be summed up with a simple platitude.

At the core of a super team is deep-seated trust. And as leaders, we often believe that trust has to be earned, but the secret is that the best way to build trust is to extend it to others even before it is earned. Sounds scary, right?

Here are three valuable strategies leaders can use to develop high levels of trust as they build a super team:

1. Clarify your organizational values—agreeing on a set of behavioral values that drive the actions of every team member is an effective way to build a healthy culture that results in a winning team.

2. Communicate with intentionality and humility—leaning into healthy conflict and communicating decisions broadly with timeliness will strengthen a team’s outcomes.

3. Identify what success looks like—sharing one goal across the team develops cohesion and unity as each team member brings their energy and skills to effort.

On a super team, we all lean into our jobs with full confidence that our teammates will honor what we bring for the win! It takes intentionality to build trust through clarifying your organization’s values, committing to healthy communication, including conflict, and defining success with shared goals across the entire team.
